<![CDATA[Stop Treating Consoles Like Sports Teams]]> Any sports fan will tell you of the highs and lows of following their team through thick and thin. Last minute winners, heartbreaking losses, and skillful legends are carved into their memories. Right now, my team is pretty good, and for a long time it was very, very bad. Before that, we were tragically good, winning nothing despite our greatness. I understand the high of winning, and the gut-punch of just missing out. I know what it's like to think you just need one more player, one lucky break, one big bounce, and it's all sorted. You can't leave your team, so all you can do is hope the chips fall. But your games console is not a sports team. Stop treating it like one.

However, Xbox Series and PS5 fans have been left waiting, and waiting, and waiting, as the RTX option taunts them with a greyed-out checkbox. But it might finally be arriving all these years later.

<![CDATA[It's Been Ten Years Since Microsoft Almost Ruined Xbox Forever]]> Microsoft still hasn’t recovered from the Xbox One reveal. It was a paradigm shifting moment in the gaming industry that turned what was once a leader in overblown console wars into a laughing stock. High on television, Kinect, and its own misguided view of a connected future, Xbox stumbled out of the event with over a decade of lost ground to recover. We still love to crack jokes about Don Mattrick’s awkward rambling of buzzwords associated with sports and TV, all while trying to sell us an overpriced console with not enough games and far too much baggage. Years later and Phil Spencer is still struggling to pick up all the pieces.

<![CDATA[Xbox Just Needs One Great Game]]> There’s been a lot of talk about Xbox's future lately, and I can understand why. By Phil Spencer's own admission, Microsoft "lost" the last generation, ceding the ground it had built up in the 360 era as the Xbox One's gimmicks and games misfired while Sony solidified the PlayStation as the dominant console in pop culture and the destination for premium, exclusive experiences you won't find anywhere else. With this new generation, Xbox sharply changed tactics. The introduction of Game Pass and the cheaper Series S model saw it make a play as the people's console, while it has been biding its time on exclusives with major acquisitions. Sony has mostly stood still so far this gen, yet somehow it has opened up a wider cultural lead.

High waisted is in, then low wasted is in. We want sequels, then cinematic universes, then standalone adventures. <![CDATA[Why Can't Starfield And Spider-Man 2 Launch At The Same Time?]]> Video game release dates have become pretty fluid over the past decade or so. They're more rough estimates than fixed points in time these days, and that's absolutely fine. In fact, it's better than fine. I welcome it. As a few heavy hitters have proved recently, it's better to push a game's launch multiple times than offer it up to the world in an unfinished state. Cyberpunk 2077 shows how badly things can go if you stick to a date in the calendar (even after multiple delays), and the decision to launch the game in the state it was should serve as a warning to not only CD Projekt Red but every other developer with something in the pipeline.

Censorship at its most literal is the suppression of speech, but that definition leaves a lot of room for interpretation. <![CDATA[There Is No Fixing Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League]]> Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is currently down on the floor, gasping for breath, blood spraying from its teeth, so I'm not gonna kick it any further. In fact, I'm going to rack my brain for a nice thing to say about it - the characters all seemed to have well-established and authentic personalities in the cutscenes we've seen so far. The most important thing for me personally was that the game got Harley Quinn right, and it appears to have done that. So, good job. But I won't lie, the latest trailer did not make it look good, and pretty much everyone agreed. So much so that the game has reportedly been delayed into late 2023 (as recently as two weeks ago the PlayStation showcase emphasised the May 26 release date) and could even be bumped to 2024. But there's just no fixing it. Suicide Squad is what it is.

<![CDATA[The Problem With Mass Effect 3's Ending Is Not The Child Catalyst]]> I've given up fighting about the Mass Effect 3 ending. With the Extended Cut, I think the Destroy ending is perfectly serviceable. Mass Effect’s ending is effective - the hero sacrifices themselves to save the galaxy, ridding it of its mightiest threat, just after taking down their corrupted enemy and joining forces with their loyalest ally. The world is saved, but our hero is lost. It's a bittersweet finale, topped off by the final shot of our fallen warrior gasping for breath on an abandoned rock somewhere before a cut to black. It's not the most inventive ending in the world, but it is effective. The problem is not that the ending is bad, but that there are too many of them, and that has soured people on everything involved - including The Child.

<![CDATA[Starfield's Latest Trailer Makes It Seem Small, And That's A Good Thing]]> Starfield has long been touting itself as a huge game. Not only as a tentpole release in the year that will challenge for all the major awards, but also in sheer scope. When Bethesda gets everything right, it creates the most replayable games on the planet - we'll never see another game quite like Skyrim - and some of this replayability comes from the size itself; you can always go a new direction, wander to a new land, meet a new character. Starfield's promise of 1,000 planets seemed to be an attempt to repeat this, but felt like a bridge too far, and an ethos of quantity over quality. The latest trailer, which reveals the September 6 release date, makes the game feel small, and that's a major positive.

I don't love the messy name, but it's a little cleaner than Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, so even that is worthy of respect. Speaking of, ahead of Survivor's launch in April, I've jumped back into the original to remind myself of all the combat I'm going to suck at. Survivor was a huge swing, and modernised Tomb Raider in ways that make it perfectly suited to the current era, yet it doesn't hold an especially fond a place in the overall Tomb Raider canon - with many worried that what comes next will hew too close to what Survivor wrought. <![CDATA[The Call Of Duty Xbox Deal Explained]]> If you only read gaming news casually, you might be under the impression that Microsoft just bought the rights to Call of Duty, and now Sony is crying foul. That's only part of the story, however. Microsoft actually bought Activision Blizzard King, a conglomerate of three of the biggest games studios in the world (which makes, amongst other things, Call of Duty). Microsoft plans to absorb these three massive companies, which already combine to make a really massive company, into its own really really massive company, making it really really really massive. I think it's bad for gaming as a whole, but what's worse is that the only sticking point for legislators seems to be Call of Duty.

<![CDATA[We Don’t Need Mean Protagonists Like Atomic Heart’s P3]]> Atomic Heart's protagonist is being called one of the most insufferable characters in the history of video games, which might be a bit overblown. We still have a ways to go, but it's easy to forget just how dire video game writing used to be. Duke Nukem is mocked nowadays, but you have to remember he was once an example of good writing. My problem with player-character Sergey Nechaev, often referred to as simply P-3, is not necessarily that he's annoying or insufferable, but that he is incessantly mean in a way that fundamentally damages my enjoyment of and connection with the game. It seems to be a popular direction in modern gaming, and it has never once landed.

<![CDATA[Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League Is Full Of The Numbers We All Hate]]> Critics and players don’t always see eye to eye on things. Players tend to only think about fun in the moment; is this game more enjoyable than not playing the game, and is it better than sitting on my couch playing nothing? Likewise, critics can get too cerebral at times, performatively talking up games that are different and fresh, putting too much stock in a game with an awkward tilt, and forgetting that most of the players we’re talking to just want to have a good time. So I get that sometimes when I say ‘who would want this?’, the answer is sometimes ‘most normal players’ and I’m the Principal Skinner who’s out of touch. But surely no one wants Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League like this.

<![CDATA[Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League’s Hype Could Be Over Before It Begins]]> Sony just announced that tomorrow’s State of Play will feature 15 minutes of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League gameplay footage, and that feels like a bold risk. On the one hand, after (potentially fake) leaks and a delay have derailed hype, I have to praise the game for betting on itself. Rocksteady isn’t dishing out a series of flashy cinematic trailers here, but an elongated look at gameplay itself. I just hope the hype isn’t over before it begins.

<![CDATA[Atomic Heart's Save Room Cartoon Contains A Racist Caricature]]> Atomic Heart launched this week, a sci-fi shooter with a '50s Soviet aesthetic that includes a real Russian cartoon you can watch in the game's break rooms. These are where employees of Facility 3826 would rest during shifts, and also where you can save the game. You can also watch the cartoon, Nu, Pogodi!, a sort of Russian Tom and Jerry, in its entirety. Unfortunately, this includes a racist caricature.

<![CDATA[Atomic Heart Players Complain About Lack Of Basic Features Like Adjustable FOV And Subtitles]]> Atomic Heart launched to mixed reviews, but players have noticed the absence of some fairly basic features. As well as the Soviet-inspired shooter not launching with the promised ray-tracing feature, it also doesn't contain the ability to change the FOV, a staple of almost all first-person PC games. <![CDATA[I Don't Want To Live In A World Where Saints Row Is A Risk]]> Embracer Group is the latest big player in the video game market, and it's hard to know what it stands for right now. It's currently buying up huge properties like Tomb Raider and Lord of the Rings, and making promises of five triple-A games in the next five years from just one of its many studios, and four Lord of the Rings games too, which seems to suggest an ethos of IP reliance and smaller, more readily available titles, rather than the prestige, eight year development cycle process taken by Naughty Dog and Rockstar. There's certainly a gap in the market for these double-A games, as the 'indie plus' titles from Annapurna and Devolver have shown. But now Embracer has said it will take fewer risks after Saints Row, and I'm not sure what that means if Saints Row constitutes a risk.

Some have described it as an alternate history where the USSR wins the Second World War, but that’s not so much an alternate history as it is ‘history’. In any case, this is a game with politics baked through it, so why is it so afraid of them?

But you'd also want to consider not just how good they were in the moment, but how influential they were overall, and what their legacy has led to. <![CDATA[Hellblade 2 Is The Most Exciting And Most Worrying Game Of 2023]]> For the past few years, the biggest appeal for me has lay in the 'quite big' games over the 'very big' games. Last year, when everyone knew God of War Ragnarok and Elden Ring would duke it out for GOTY, I had my eye on Legends: Arceus and Ghostwire: Tokyo. Back in 2020 when we had The Last of Us Part 2 and Ghost of Tsushima, my heart belonged to THPS, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, and Yakuza: Like A Dragon. To tell you the truth, I was scared. I have fallen out of love with the big triple-A scene lately, with double-A adventures and indie mavericks holding more charm than big, bombastic offerings which all seem variations on the same theme. The only thing I caught of the Dreadwolf leaks without actively looking for them was the inventory screen, which seemed (like all modern RPGs) to be a litany of minor customisable features on various parts of the body to create an oversaturated mess. The leg bone's connected to the +4.5 percent damage to corrupted enemies bone, and all that. It didn't make for happy reading, but thankfully I eventually dove in.

<![CDATA[Why Are Hi-Fi Rush's Levels So Long?]]> I don't think I 'get' Hi-Fi Rush. I don't begrudge its success, and it's always welcome when a game that does things a little differently becomes a smash hit. It has a cartoonish art style, relatively short runtime, is a major change in aesthetics and theme for its studio, plays with niche genre mechanics, and was shadow-dropped. Regardless of my personal feelings towards the game, I'm glad I get to write that sentence. It's a welcome change from photorealistic triple-A aesthetics in big, bloated beasts that rely on formulaic building blocks of dull familiarity with a year-long bombastic hype cycle. There's one major issue that puts me off the game more than anything else, but as I think about it, I realise I simply do not matter.

There are various categories you can be scored in across the game, and I keep getting ‘B’ or higher in most of them, but for ‘Timing’ I’m lucky to get a C. Hi-Fi Rush mainly relies on rock and punk music, and it makes sense to lean into something so rhythmic, where the best is crucial to the music’s overall composition. The mainline Yakuza games have their fair share of violence — even smacking people in the face with bikes is commonplace, and plenty of blood is spilled in the name of betrayal, revenge, and love. Yet Ishin feels noticeably bloodier, as you take on the role of the famous samurai Sakamoto Ryoma and trade the series' traditional bikes, baseball bats, and trash cans for a sword that's as sharp as Akiyama’s wit.

While it's a running joke (please don't look at my search history, it really is a joke) that Pokemon's Tsareena is my wife, in reality it could never work. She can't say anything but repeating her own name, and it doesn't matter how pretty she is, I need a bit of conversation in my life. My real gaming wife, courtesy of a proposal early this year, was Neon Violet, in all her 'spit in my mouth and step on me' glory. Neon White is described as a game for freaks, and Neon Violet was the freak for me. You'll notice I keep using 'was'. That's because Neon Violet is no longer my wife. Violet, I want a divorce. I'm marrying Magik.

<![CDATA[Winter Is The Best Time To Play FIFA 23]]> If you asked me to describe the way I play FIFA, I'd say "recreationally". I'd also think you were a bit of an odd bod going around asking strange questions, but my answer would be fairly simple. I don't play Ultimate Team, I only dabble in Online Seasons, and while I used to tear through Career Mode until the game was full of fake players because the real ones had all retired, these days I get bored after a season and start playing something else. But over winter, there's nothing better than jumping on for a quick game of FIFA 23 against the computer and running around in the snow.

<![CDATA[Blue Protocol Could Be 2023's Surprise Hit]]> It seems people don't quite know what to make of Blue Protocol. It is being discussed as "Amazon's Genshin Impact", both of which are being used as insults. But I'm not sure that's particularly accurate or wise. While I will admit Blue Protocol was not one of the trailers that most impressed me during The Game Awards, on a rewatch I can see its potential. Not only does it seem like a game I personally may be interested in, it could also have mammoth potential, and it's well worth keeping an eye on.

<![CDATA[Crash Team Rumble Is My Biggest Gaming Worry Of 2023]]> I've never quite gotten the hype around Crash Bandicoot's Wumpa League. Crash Bandicoot was the very first video game I ever played, and I've stuck with the madcap marsupial through all of his ups and downs. While I'm often critical of remakes and remasters as safe cash grabs over an attempt at something new, I allowed Crash to grab my cash with both the N. Sanity Trilogy and Nitro Fueled. Crash Bandicoot 4 felt like a justification for that, but then things were all quiet on the wumpa front. There were long-held rumours that the next game was a battle royale of sorts named Wumpa League, but it always seemed to be whispers in the aether. The Game Awards finally confirmed the game's existence (though it will now be called Crash Team Rumble) via a live-action Crash Bandicoot crashing the stage, and now that it's here I'm more convinced than ever that I don't really want it.

<![CDATA[Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League Needs To Get Harley Quinn Right]]> Gotham Knights was one of my biggest letdowns of 2022. I don't always think it's that useful at the end of the year to look back on the worst times, but in order to look onward to 2023, I cannot avoid it. The closer we got to Gotham Knights' launch, the more I started to pull away. Previews were limited and controlled, and Warner Bros. arrived at Gamescom armed with a life-size Batcycle for cute pictures but no video game. The lack of trailers, the poor gameplay footage, the mishmash of single-player and co-op... the warning signs were there, and I knew it was not going to be a Bat Classic. However (and here's why I needed to bring up Gotham Knights), my hopes remain strong for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. A delay is par for the course and the few details we've gotten seem positive, even if the lingering fears over the whole four-person-squad thing remains. So please, 2023, give me a good Harley Quinn.

<![CDATA[Complete Guide And Walkthrough For The Devil In Me]]> The Devil In Me is the finale for season one of Supermassive Game's Dark Pictures anthology, and it brings with it a range of new features for players to test out. The plot follows the Lonnit Entertainment documentary crew as they find themselves in the recreation of H.H. Holmes 'Murder Castle', where things start to get a bit more real than they bargained for.

<![CDATA[The Twelve Pains Of Gamer Christmas]]> Regarding holiday music, I'm a big fan of satire. But, of course, I hold high esteem for traditional hymns. And I'll be the first to belt out one of Darlene Love's or Mariah Carey's pop Christmas classics! Still, nothing tickles my funny bone like campy tunes such as Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer, The Chimney Song (Something's Stuck Up In The Chimney), and the uproarious The Twelve Pains Of Christmas.
