In news that shouldn’t surprise anyone at this point, the launch of Destiny 2’s Season of the Deep wasn’t the smoothest. The scheduled maintenance window, which was meant to end at 10am on Tuesday, was extended by an hour. Then it was extended another hour, then it was extended again until it finally launched sometime around 12:30pm. Once players could get into the game, many found themselves disconnecting from servers and getting kicked back into orbit. As if on cue, complaints started to fill up the replies of the Bungie Help Twitter account.

But it was only once the servers were stable that the real complaining began. On Reddit and Twitter, players moaned that the weapons models were all reissues and reskins. They started whining about how slow you move when you’re underwater, and about the reduced drop rate of Neomuna weapons. Mostly, they complained about the new fishing activity, and how it was a waste of time and resources that should have gone towards making crucible matches, or bringing back sparrow racing, and implementing whatever random feature they think that Destiny desperately needs. Are these all valid criticisms worth hearing? I have no idea, I’m too busy catching fish to care.

Fishing is an essential pastime for any MMO, and it’s wild to think Destiny has gone on all these years without it. As a World of Warcraft player, fishing has always been an indispensable part of my routine. I can’t even imagine finishing a session without a trip to my favorite fishing hole, and I can already see myself falling into the same rhythm with Destiny’s new take on things.

The value of fishing in an MMO is in how casual it is. When you’ve just spent several hours sweating it out in a Mythic+ dungeon or a few dozen brutal rounds of Trials, there’s nothing better than relaxing on the shore and mindlessly casting your line out to scoop up a pile of fish. It’s the perfect way to wind down because it’s almost nothing, but it’s just engaging enough that it lets your mind decompress and prepare to log off for the night.

Bungie was really smart about Destiny's fishing. Pretty much everything you do will earn you some bait, and your inventory space for bait is so large that you don’t have to worry about running out of room. You can do all of your ritual activities and whatever challenges you’ve prepared for, and at the end of the night you’ll have a big ol’ pile of space worms you can go catch some fish with. Instead of cooking that fish into meals for buffs like other games, Destiny’s fish are deposited into a giant aquarium. As the aquarium fills up over time, you get to enjoy the fruits of your labor in a measurable way. By completing triumphs, you’ll unlock new decorations for the aquarium too.

There’s also gear tied to fishing. The process is a little opaque, but it seems like the more you fish the better your chance of finding rare fish, which will reward you with the reissued Reckoning weapons when you add them to your fish tank. You can’t focus these weapons with engrams until you’ve found at least one of every kind, so fishing is actually an integral step to the gear acquisition loop this season.

I have criticisms about Destiny 2 just like everyone else, but I’m vibing with fishing too much to really care right now. The therapeutic quality of a good fishing session should not be overlooked, and for a community that’s become exceedingly hostile towards the game over the last few months, fishing might be just the thing Destiny needed.
